Yesterday we announced that EASD had been awarded the first #EnergyCLASSPrize through the US Department of Energy - we’re one of only 25 school districts in the nation to receive this award. Going forward, our team of Energized Elks staff and students will receive training from @energygov to identify, plan, and implement critical upgrades in our school facilities. What does that look like in EASD? Prioritizing rehabilitating our historic buildings, reducing our carbon footprint, exploring alternative energy sources sensitive to the protected marsh and wildlife area between the Middle School and High School grounds, improving air quality and learning environments districtwide, and reshaping our ongoing Capital Improvement Plan model. As part of the American-Made Program, this @energygov prize provides funding to 25 of the nation’s schools to support critical clean energy infrastructure and health improvements. Better facilities pave the way for better learning environments and better educational outcomes. Elkhorn will serve as an example for rural districts throughout the country. #EnergyClassPrize #RenewAmericasSchools #DepartmentofEnergy #1Herd

EASD congratulates Maggy Green as one of the Kohl Education Foundation Teacher Fellowship 2023 award winners! Maggy Green is the teacher and coordinator for the Senior Skills program at the Career and College Academy on Gateway Technical College's campus. Maggy's high expectations for students have them graduating with a career-based learning experience or apprenticeship, service to the community, and Gateway Technical College coursework. In addition, Maggy has dramatically advanced the curricular offerings for all students at the Career and College Academy (CCA) by pursuing her Master's degree to be certified by the Wisconsin Technical College System to teach college-level English and Composition classes for students attending the CCA. Maggy firmly believes that every student can achieve high academic outcomes and scaffolds and supports their learning—so each student gets the help they need to succeed.

EASD congratulates Dr. Kelly Demerath as one of the Kohl Principal Leadership 2023 award winners. Dr. Demerath was recognized for her leadership and innovation through the expansion of the Career and College Academy on Gateway Technical College’s campus from 70 to over 200 students (adding grades 9 and 10), the successful completion of the Department of Labor YouthBuild project (50 students constructed a single-family home in Whitewater), and the numerous pathways for students to earn certifications and technical diplomas in fields such as cosmetology, culinary arts, welding, and construction. Dr. Demerath’s grant writing and program innovation efforts have won over $2.5 million in state and federal grant funding for the EASD and Walworth County communities in the areas of mental health resources for youth, youth apprenticeship programming and increasing access for all students to graduate high school with industry-recognized credentials and free college credits. What are Dr. Demerath and her awesome team working on now? - creating an Associate’s Degree pathway with Gateway Technical College (beginning Summer 2023) that provides approximately $20,000 in tuition-free college savings for students and families (along with a straight transfer to any UW System 4-year college), partnering with Lake Lawn Resort to create a supported employment pathway for students who benefit from job coaching as they enter the workforce, and partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Walworth County for the next YouthBuild project. If you are looking for a high school to a different degree, check out the innovative team at the Career and College Academy!
