Youthbuild

“When we build good things, they end up building us”

The Elkhorn YouthBuild Program is funded by a Department of Labor Grant of $827,964 to build single family homes for families who cannot qualify for a traditional bank loan. The program is also funded by Wisconsin Department of Instruction's Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Program. Elkhorn YouthBuild (EYB) is part of the WalCo Student Works program and will enroll 10-15 students in six-month cohorts to work in cooperation with local groups to build a home for a low-income family.

As part of their student experience, EYB students will:

  • Attend academic programming in the morning and after their school day, will learn on the construction site in the afternoon

  • Build a home in the community for a low-income family

  • Learn building skills through hands-on experience, gain industry-recognized credentials (Home Builders' Institute – Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate, OSHA, First Aid, CPR)

  • Be paid in a work experience course for their time on the construction site

  • Learn valuable leadership and teamwork skills to transfer into the world of work

  • Gain 12 months of follow-up case management from the team to assist with goals of joining the world of work, college, apprenticeship training, or military service.
