“When we build good things, they end up building us”
The Career & College Academy at Gateway has been awarded a two-year, $900,000
YouthBuild
Grant. Elkhorn YouthBuild (EYB) will enroll 10-15 students in six-month cohorts to work in cooperation with Community Action, Inc. of Walworth and Rock Counties, to build a home for a low-income family.
As part of their student experience, EYB students will:
Attend CCA in the morning and are learning on the construction site in the afternoon
Build a home in the community for a low-income family
Learn building skills through hands-on experience, gain industry-recognized credentials (Home Builders' Institute – Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate, OSHA, First Aid, CPR)
Be paid in a work experience course for their time on the construction site
Learn valuable leadership and teamwork skills to transfer into the world of work
Gain 12 months of follow-up case management from the team to assist with goals of joining the world of work, college, apprenticeship training, or military service.
